We tested: PetMatrix SmartSticks and SmartChips, Yum!

Tink was so excited to be able to do her first review. Although she is still pretty little, the Peanut Butter Smart Chips were perfect for her because they were a bit smaller. Casey, she chews on it for a minute and it is gone. Might be best for smaller dogs, not 75 pound boxers!

A few days later we tried the Chicken SmartSticks and both of them were in heaven. Casey did a much better job with this one. Tink looks really funny carrying them around. Hers of course lasts longer than Casey so Casey is trying to steal hers.

I put together this video; which is a collection of photos that I took as they were enjoying their new treats.

Casey has a pretty sensitive stomach. It is hard to find things she can snack on that won't cause he to be running outside in the middle of the night to eat grass. She also gets extremely licky and salivates when she's eaten something that doesn't agree with her. She has eaten the same food all her life. We tried switching and always have to go back Poor baby.

But we give these products two-thumbs up. The peanut butter flavor seems to be the one they like the best.

PetMatrix Expands Rawhide-Free Dog Chew Treats Line with New SmartSticks, SmartChips
Expansion offers additional treats for “Smart” pet parents who avoid rawhide

NEW YORK – The demand for high-quality, rawhide-free chew treats continues to grow since “Smart” pet parents know it can be unhealthy to give dogs rawhide chew treats.

smartchips - CopyResponding to the high demand, SmartBones by PetMatrix, announced today the addition of SmartSticks and SmartChips to its rawhide-free dog chew treats product line.  Similar to the original line of SmartBones, the new products are made with chicken, vegetables and other healthy ingredients and are perfect for the four-to-five out of 10 consumers who prefer not to feed their dogs rawhide.

“We’re excited to offer additional rawhide-free options to our customers who have responded so positively to our product line,” said PetMatrix Chief Science Officer Martin Glinsky, Ph.D.  “Chew treats are an important part of every healthy dog’s diet since eating kibble alone doesn’t thoroughly exercise a dog’s mouth and can cause teeth to become disused and plaque-ridden.”

SmartSticks - CopyAnd, since keeping pets healthy is paramount, SmartSticks and SmartChips contain a special vegetable layer that is fortified with vitamins and minerals to help supplement daily nutritional requirements.  In fact, these treats offer more nutritional benefits than standard chew treats because rawhide treats offer very little nutritional value, Dr. Glinsky said.

“Even though rawhide is a form of protein, all proteins aren’t equal,” Dr. Glinsky said.  “Rawhide is an extremely low-quality form of protein, not the type that animals need for nutrition.”

In addition to health benefits, SmartSticks and SmartChips are easier on a dog’s digestive system compared to rawhide treats.  Both products are 99.2 percent digestible, which reduces the potential for intestinal blockages – a problem that can occur when dogs swallow large pieces of rawhide treats.

Both products are available in Chicken and Peanut Butter flavors at fine pet stores around the country and at www.SmartBones.com

  1. I like these because we have a good rawhide free option. I think the Chicken SmartSticks are maybe a good bet for my girls (they're both about as big as your Boxer at 70 lbs each or so!)

    1. We liked them for that reason too. Casey was a rescue, and she didn't get all her teeth in from lack of proper nutrition when she was little. So hard chews aren't good for her. She just tries to swallow them.
